Do I Need A Dehumidifier?

In my search for a solution to control my house’s humidity condition, I have tried opening the windows, turning on the fan, turning on the air-conditioning and air purifier. My home’s relative humidity regularly fluctuates between 63% and 68% in the morning and builds up to 70%-83% in the afternoon.

Besides turning on the air-conditioning, all of these methods only managed to bring down the relative humidity at most by 5%. Thus, my house’s relative humidity is constantly above 60%, which is considered by many to be on the high-side.

These conditions have influenced my decision to invest in a dehumidifier to prevent molds and moisture from damaging my belongings. From my research, the main features that I considered (in no particular order) when choosing the right type of dehumidifier for my needs are:

  1. Affected area
  2. Volume of moisture to extract
  3. Power consumption
  4. Size of the water tank
  5. Noise from the dehumidifier
  6. Aesthetics of the dehumidifier
  7. Budget

My place will require something above 20m2 (point 1), and from reading reviews, I feel that a dehumidifier that extracts 12 litres per day will barely make it (point 2). Thus, I am looking at a unit that can extract >=16 litres per day.

The options that I have were:

  • Midea 16L MDDF-09DEN3 – 16 Litres/day (SGD299.00)
  • Novita Dehumidifier ND328 – 20 Litres/day (SGD588.00)
  • Europace EDH 6251S – 25 Litres/day (SGD584.00)
  • Europace EDH 6161T- 16 Litres/day (SGD499.00)
  • LifePro DH24 24L/D – 24 Litres/day (SGD299.00)
  • Deerma DEM-DT16C -16 Litres/day (SGD189.90)

While selecting for my dehumidifier, I also wanted to support local Singaporean brands. This condition left me with the following options.

  • Novita Dehumidifier ND328 – 20 Litres/day (SGD588.00)
  • Europace EDH 6251S – 25 Litres/day (SGD584.00)
  • Europace EDH 6161T- 16 Litres/day (SGD499.00)
  • LifePro DH24 – 24 Litres/day (SGD299.00)

Among the options, both Novita and Europace are well-established brands that offer 3 years and up to 5 years warranty, respectively. However, LifePro is a newer brand that I have never heard of, so I read more about their products. To my surprise, the LifePro DH24 uses a Panasonic compressor, and many reviews suggested that it is a worthy brand – not mentioning the price and features. The downsides are it only gave a 1-year warranty, and its a brand unknown to me.

In the end, I went with LifePro DH24 to give it a chance and to do my part to support another local brand. Keeping my fingers crossed that it will not disappoint me. I will post a follow-up article to update my experience with the LifePro DH24 dehumidifier in a few weeks. So do stay tuned.
